Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis)

is a unique wild bush indigenous to South Africa’s mountainous region of Cederberg (just north of Cape Town), where it still thrives today. Harvested from the Cape, our two farms cover an area of 1900ha, Rooibos is harvested from virgin veld every 3-4 years to allow these wild plants to produce seeds to ensure sustainable harvesting from the Fynbos ecosystem whilst conserving a wide range of succulents, geophytes and wild flowers. Working together with the local communities around the farms to support the local community – creating employment opportunities and protecting the environment.

Rooibos is a flavorful, caffeine-free alternative to black and green tea, The main nutritional benefit of rooibos tea lies in its rich antioxidant content and it being a source of some unique polyphenols, including aspalathin. These protective plant compounds help protect against the free radical damage that leads to conditions like diabetes, heart disease and cancer..

Rooibos Tea Medical Benefits

  • Rooibos is a good source of antioxidants and is the only known source of a potent antioxidant aspalathin, which research indicates plays a role in combating several lifestyle diseases.

  • Unlike black and green teas, Rooibos is naturally caffeine free (not decaffeinated) and therefore suitable for children, infants and breast-feeding mothers.

  • Rooibos has proven cancer-fighting properties in animal research studies, and exciting new research points towards the role that Rooibos can play in promoting heart health and preventing diabetes.

  • Rooibos contains low amounts of tannin (tannins are astringent, bitter-tasting plant polyphenols that bind and precipitate proteins and interfere with iron absorption in the body.)

  • After centuries of use, no negative side effects of Rooibos have ever been recorded.

Rooibos tea is commonly prepared in the same manner as black tea, usually without or with a little milk, and/or sugar or honey. Other methods include a slice of lemon and using honey instead of sugar to sweeten. It is also served as espresso, lattes, cappuccinos or iced tea.

What is Honeybush Tea?

A unique South African indigenous treasure, sustainably and organically  grown and hand harvested on the Southern slopes of the Agulhas plains, South Africa.

Honeybush is part of South Africa’s unique fynbos biome (which is recognized as one of the six botanical kingdoms of the world) surrounded by mountain ranges. The bushes grow wild in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces in South Africa however our honeybush are harvested from a sustainable source ie. not from any source in the wild, a measure which contributes to the conservation of the natural genetic diversity.

The name Honeybush comes from the yellow, honey-scented flowers that cover the bushes during spring. The sweet fragrance of the flowers strongly resembles that of honey. However, it is the vegetative parts of the shrub and not the flowers that are used to make a refreshing sweet-tasting herbal tea.

Honeybush teas are rich in antioxidants, low in tannin and contains no caffeine and is high in calcium, copper, zinc, magnesium, potassium and sodium.
